Article about the rise of elitist cocktail bars, tracing the history of the current cultural movement towards fancy-schmancy drinks. The article completely misses the point that we need a variety of bars in our lives. Personally, I like visiting the dive at the end of our block for a quick drink at the end of the night, hitting a sports bar for big footie matches and going out for fine cocktails. Experiencing the latter is a combination of appreciating the artistry of cocktail creation. It is also a somewhat more luxurious experience. I am there to savor, not only the cocktails, but the company. We choose to have different experiences at different times. It feels like the author of this is too narrowly focused on the singular experience.
Thoughts on this?

I had to go do some digging today after it was decided that May’s theme would be mint cocktails. Apart from the mojito & the mint julep, I wanted to see what else was out there.
One site lists out 63 recipes - the Gin Genie looks great as does the Primo Trace Smash. There are multiple variations on the mojito and julep here. Someone will need to make a grasshopper :)
Slakethirst shows off a concoction from the Savoy Cocktail book simply titled The Mint Cocktail.
Serious Eats has a gorgeous mint-cardamon cocktail. This sounds like it would be sweet but not cloying.
For a dessert-y side, these Lemon Champagne Mint Granita cocktails look beautiful.
Time to do some research before next week!

I have previously documented my Kickstarter love in these pages, but wanted to add this one for Swizzle Sticks.
Check out these perfect-for-cocktail swizzling implements!

Man, we’re all going to have stills in our houses soon, huh? All these places are doing custom blends for people. This sounds fun, though!
