Tonight's LARC: Shots

muguet:

Tonight at the LARC gathering I’m bringing a bottle of Akvavit and going to serve up three kinds of smorrebrod (a smoked salmon, a roast beef, and an egg and tomato chutney one). The festivities may or may not be Tumbl-blogged.

Skol!

I’m SO sad to miss this.

Debunking Booze Myths → gizmodo.com

I love that Gizmodo writers take the time not only to do some research into myths but will use themselves as test subjects.

Handmade Liqueurs (UK Only) → alchemistdreams.co.uk

I’ve read about bespoke gin in London, and now along comes Alchemist Dreams with their handmade offerings. You can go through and choose either house blends, or take your own spin by choosing among flavors. You start with fruit (e.g. blackberry, raspberry, lime) then add flavors like juniper, clove or wormwood.

People are looking for mashups all over the place!

Amaro Tasting: Seattle

Earlier this week I was in Seattle on business and a friend suggested we hit the speakeasy above Tavern Law. I started the evening downstairs with Gatsby’s punch and then upstairs said I wanted something warm & bourbon-y. My friend got something lighter. When we were done with our first round of drinks, we weren’t quite ready to give up, but weren’t interested in anything heavy. So our awesome bartender, Pete, decided we should have an amaro tasting.

Pete lined up six different types, ranging from sweeter to more bitter.

The back of one bottle caught our eye for its less than perfect translation.

My friend and I preferred the ones in the middle, not as sweet, but not as astringent as the most bitter one (the Luxardo). His favorite was the Zucca, but I loved the Ramazzotti. The Ramazzotti had flavors of cherry and was port-like in its mouth feel. Something to pick up for after dining sips at home!

Eight Kindes of Drunkennes

The first is ape drunke; and he leapes, and singes, and hollowes, and danceth for the heavens;

The second is lion drunke; and he flings the pots about the house, calls his hostesse whore, breakes the glasse windowes with his dagger, and is apt to quarrell with anie man that speaks to him;

The third is swine drunke; heavie, lumpish, and sleepie, and cries for a little more drinke, and a fewe more cloathes;

The fourth is sheepe drunk; wise in his conceipt, when he cannot bring foorth a right word;

The fifth is mawdlen drunke; when a fellowe will weepe for kindnes in the midst of ale, and kisse you, saying, “By God, captaine, I love thee. Goe thy wayes; thou dost not thinke so often of me as I doo thee; I would (if it pleased God) I could not love thee as well as I doo;” and then he puts his finger in his eye, and cryes;

The sixt is Martin drunke; when a man is drunke, and drinkes himselfe sober ere he stirre;

The seventh is goate drunke; when, in his drunkennes, he hath no minde but on lecherie;

The eighth is fox drunke—when he is craftie drunke, as manie of the Dutchmen bee, that will never bargaine but when they are drunke.
